September - Independence Month

Welcome to September, or Septi-hambre (the combination of September and hungry) as some of the locals have dubbed it.  For many this means a time of decreased spending, more free time, and time to slow down and focus on the family. 

September is also a special time here in Cozumel, since it marks two very important holidays; Independence Day and Fiestas de San Miguel Arcangel.

Independence Day celebrations start on September 15th, as local residents and visitors gather around the Palacio Municipal (Town Hall) to participate in the traditional “grito”, or cry for independence.   Lead by the Mayor of Cozumel from the balcony at 11:00 p.m., the cry “Viva Mexico” is made.   Following the “grito” is fireworks display, and other festivities including music, folkloric dances as well as traditional foods.  

On September 16, the actual Independence Day, the celebrations continue with a parade that goes through Cozumel's downtown waterfront. Throughout the week, the food stands, games of chance and souvenirs remains operating, so even if you’re not here on the actual day, you can still participate.

The religious celebration honoring San Miguel Arcangel, who is the parton saint of the island of Cozumel, begins on September 21st.  Processions that start at the San Miguel church, located in the town square, weave their way throughout the entire downtown area. 

During this time, local residents attend mass and take part in these daily processions.   On the last day, a procession of fishermen carry an image of San Miguel Arcangel to the downtown pier and board a boat. This boat, accompanied by other boats create a  procession by sea, throwing flowers and reciting prayers to the patron saint of Cozumel.  

Bienvenidos a Septiembre o Septi-hambre (la combinación de Septiembre y hambre) como esta nombrado por los locales. Para muchos, eso significa un tiempo para gastar menos, mas tiempo libre y tiempo para relajarse y enfocarse en la familia.

Septiembre tambien es una ocasión especial en Cozumel porque señala dos días de fiestas  importantes: el Día de Independencia y las Fiestas de San Miguel Arcángel.

Las celebraciones del día de la independencia empiezan el 15 de Septiembre, mientras residentes locales y visitantes se juntan en el palacio municipal para participar en el grito tradicional, o grito de independencia. Dirigido por el presidente de Cozumel desde el balcón a las 11 p.m., el grito, “Viva Mexico” suena. Despues del grito vienen  los fuegos artificiales y otras actividades incluyendo música, bailes folklóricos, así como comida tradicional. El 16 de septiembre, el día oficial de la independencia, las celebraciones continúan con un desfile que pasa por el malecón de Cozumel. Durante la semana, los vendedores de comida, juegos de azar y recuerdos siguen operando, así que si no estas acá para el día oficial, todavía puedes participar.

La celebración religiosa honorando a San Miguel Arcángel, quien es el santo patrono de  la isla de Cozumel, empieza el 21 de septiembre. Procesiones que comienzan en la iglesia de San Miguel, ubicada en el centro del pueblo, recorre todo el centro. Mientras, residentes locales asisten a la misa y participan en esas procesiones diarias. En el último día, una procesión de pescadores lleva una imagen de San Miguel Arcángel al muelle del centro y suben a un barco. Dicho barco, acompañado por otros barcos, crean una procesión en el mar, tirando flores y recitando rezos al santo patrono de Cozumel.

Coral Reef Alliance & Cozumel Reefs

 Cozumel’s National Park “Arrecifes de Cozumel,” has completed an educational agreement with the The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) ”, a non--profit organization.  The CORAL Reef Leadership Network is now the official training scheme for the 1,200 tour guides that operate inside the National Marine Park. 

CORAL’s Reef Leadership Network is aimed at training a selection of volunteers from local tour operators and marine parks about coral reef conservation, resource management and sustainable tourism practices. This is a direct attempt to save the world’s coral. 

After completing their studies the local CORAL Reef Leaders are then expected to impart their knowledge and skills to other locals and tourists and so reduce the damage inflicted on coral reefs.

Ramiro Ferriol, CORAL Reef Leader, Cozumel, and Director, Sand Dollar Sports, said: "It's important to our future to be involved in conservation work. We have to be leaders. It's simple and takes just a little extra effort, but the rewards for our planet and our businesses are much greater."

El parque nacional de Cozumel “Arrecifes de Cozumel” ha alcanzado un acuerdo educacional con la Alianza de Arrecife Coral (Coral Reef Alliance - CORAL), una organización no lucrativa. La Red de Dirección de CORAL es ahora el plan oficial de entrenamiento para los 1,200 guías turísticos que operan dentro del Parque Marino Nacional.
La Red de Dirección de CORAL está enfocada en entrenar a una selección de voluntarios de los operadores de tours locales y parques marinos sobre la conservación de los arrecifes de coral, administración de recursos, y prácticas sustenables turísticas.  Es un esfuerzo directo a salvar el coral del mundo. 
Después de terminar con sus estudios, los líderes locales del CORAL Reef  esperan compartir su conocimiento y habilidades a los otros locales y turistas y así reducir el daño infringido a los arrecifes de coral.
Ramiro Ferriol, Lider de CORAL Reef, Cozumel, y Director de Sand Dollar Sports, dijo, “Es importante para nuestro futuro estar involucrados en  trabajo de la conservación. Tenemos que ser líderes. Es fácil, y toma no mas que un poco de esfuerzo extra, pero las recompensas para nuestro planeta y nuestros negocios seran mas grandes.

 

CIEMA welcomes Pikachu the Hedgehog

One hot day in August residents of Cozumel were reorganizing their bodega, and made a distraught call to the animal hospital that they had discovered a porcupine cowering in a dark corner of their storage area.  Dr. Ivan fled to rescue the porcupine only to find a very frightened baby Hedgehog. 

As this pygmy hedgehog originates from Africa, we can only assume that someone’s pet either escaped or was released and left to fend for itself.  Pikachu, as we have named him, is currently being treated for starvation and a lesion on his face, likely caused by a tick.  When he is well, he will be introduced to a new home in the sanctuary.

Un día caliente en Agosto, residentes de Cozumel estaban reorganizando su bodega cuando hicieron una llamada desesperada al hospital veterinario para reportar que habian descubierto un puerco espín escondido en un rincón obscuro de su bodega. El Dr. Ivan corrio a rescatar al puerco espín pero en su lugar encontró un erizo bebe muy asustado. Como este erizo enano es originario de África, solamente podemos asumir que es una mascota que se escapó o lo soltaron para defenderse solo. Pikachu, como lo nombramos, esta recibiendo tratamiento para  desnutrición y una lesión en su carita, probablemente causada por una garrapata. Cuando esté sano, el erizo será presentado a su nuevo hogar en el santuario.

Cozumel 4 You Happy Hour - Toro's Place

This week’s  Cozumel 4 You Friday Happy Hour is being hosted by Toro’s Place, right on the waterfront.   Toro’s Place is located right on the waterfront on Melgar with 5, on the second floor, down the street from McDonald’s It’s going to be a fantastic place for sunset, with LIVE reggae music and drinks specials. Plus, it's a full moon! What's better than reggae over the water with a full moon?

 Cozumel 4 You hosts a bi- weekly Friday happy hour weekly at a different location from 6 – 9 pm.  If you have an idea for a happy hour or are interested in hosting one, please contact Laura.

Toro’s Place será el anfitrión de la  hora feliz este Viernes. Toro’s Place esta ubicado en el Malecón en Melgar con 5, segundo piso, cerca de McDonald’s. Será un lugar fantástico para ver la puesta del sol con música reggae y especiales en bebidas.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" - Poodle Mania & Sammi the Siamese Kitty

Poodle Mania at the Humane Society! Currently we have 5 poodles for adoption. All have been abandoned by their owners under various circumstances, Kodak who was left at the city dump by her owner, Melina left in a empty rented apartment by her owner with her puppies, no food or water, the landlord rescued her. She found homes for all the puppies, but not Melina, now with us for the last 3 months waiting for a home.

Our newest poodle found abandoned in the streets by animal control. The stories like this are endless and heartbreaking. We have many pure bred animals at the moment. It is so hard to understand why people continue to breed and sell these animals on the island. Just the other day there were signs in the pet store for all the breeds that are currently sitting in our shelter desperately waiting for a home.

A slogan we love: Why buy when you can adopt? If anybody is in the market to adopt a pet please come and visit us. Right now the Humane Society is critically full. We have 15 dogs too many at the moment and it is very difficult for us to manage them all within the space we have. :

Our cat volunteer Sheryl rescued Sammi, a very beautiful 7 week old male Siamese kitten, that was sitting in the middle of a very busy road. Initially, sick, with infected eyes and ears and intestinal parasites, Sammi is now on the mend under the watchful eye of Sheryl. Sammi is thriving, eating well and playing like a kitten should. Sheryl is always rescuing and saving kittens that she finds and that her neighbors bring her. We need to help her out so she can continue to keep up this good work. If anybody has it in their heart to give Sammi a home please let us know

All throughout this last summer in cooperation with IFAW (International Fund of Animal Welfare), the Cozumel Humane Society has been rescuing the many dogs and cats at the city dump on the East side of the island. For the full story, please see this link:

Also, congratulations to Mega the kitty and her new family.  Mega, who is now called Caliko, was adopted last Friday, and will continue to cuddle and purr right here in Cozumel. 

Poodle Mania en la Sociedad Humanitaria! Ahora contamos con 5 poodles para adopción. Todos estaban abandonados por sus dueños bajo circunstancias variables. El dueño de Kodak lo dejo en el tiradero de la ciudad; Melina la dejaron en un departamento vacío con sus cachorros, sin agua y comida; el propietario la rescató y encontró hogares para los cachorros, pero no para Melina quien tiene 3 meses con nosotros esperando su nuevo hogar.

Nuestro mas recién encontrado poodle fue encontrado abandonado en las calles por el control animal. Historias como estas no tienen final y rompen corazones. Tenemos muchos perros de raza ahorita. Es muy difícil entender porque la gente continúa a cruzar y vender estos animales en la isla. Hace unos días había un letrero en una tienda de mascotas promocionando todas las mismas razas que están en nuestro refugio esperando urgentemente un hogar.

Un dicho que amamos: ¿Por que comprar, cuando puede adoptar? Si cualquiera esta buscando una mascota, por favor, pase a visitarnos. Ahorita la Sociedad Humanitaria esta críticamente llena y esta super difícil manejarlos a todos dentro de nuestro espacio limitado.

Nuestra voluntaria de gatos, Sheryl, rescató a Sammi, un gatito macho Siames, muy bonito, que tiene 7 semanas, estaba sentado en el centro de una calle transitada. Empezo enfermo, con ojos y oídos infectados y parásitos intestinales, ahora Sammi está en el proceso de curarse bajo el ojo cuidadoso de Sheryl. Sammi esta creciendo, comiendo bien y jugando como un gatito debería. Sheryl siempre está rescatando y salvando gatitos que encuentra y los que sus vecinos llevan a ella. Necesitamos ayudarla para que pueda seguir haciendo sus trabajos buenos. Si alguien tiene el corazón de dar un hogar a Sammi, favor de comunicarse con nosotros!
