A Week of Port Closures & Cold Fronts
It’s only early December, however, already Cozumel has been visited by Cold Fronts 11 and 12. Island residents have been adjusting to wildly fluctuating temperatures that range between highs of 29 – 31 C (81 – 87 F) and lows of 15 – 17 C (59 – 62 F). This makes for cold mornings, warm afternoons and chilly evening temperatures. Aside from the fluctuations in temperature, weather here in the island, has been sunny and clear. Winds associated with these cold fronts have caused our ports closures for smaller boats, including Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. Cold Front 11, which brought rough seas to Cozumel December 1st, actually caused the suspension of the 6pm the ferry service from Calica to Cozumel, serviced by Transbordadores del Caribe.
Es solo el inicio de diciembre y sin embargo, ya Cozumel ha sido visitado por los frentes fríos 11 y 12. Los Residentes de la isla se han ajustado salvajemente a las diferentes temperaturas que oscilan entre los niveles máximos de 29 – 31 C (81 – 87 F) y mínimas de 15 – 17 C (59 – 62 F). Esto lo hace que en las mañana sean muy frias, en las tardes cálidas y temperaturas frescas por la noche. Aparte de los cambios de temperatura, el clima aqui en la isla, ha sido despejado y soleado. Los vientos asociados con estos frentes fríos han causado el cierre del puerto para embarcaciones pequeñas, incluyendo la tarde del lunes y el martes por la mañana. El Frente Frio 11 que trajo fuerte marejada en Cozumel el 1 de diciembre, con la cual se llevo a cabo la suspensión del cruce del ferry de carros a las 6 de la tarde desde Calica a Cozumel, atendido por Transbordadores del Caribe
   
Epic Turtle Nest Numbers This Year
The Municipal Director of Ecology and Environment, Rafael Chacon Diaz, has reported that 4,300 turtle nests were discovered in Cozumel this year. This number is more than double of last year’s find of 1,900 turtle nests. There are two types of turtles that nest in Cozumel, loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), and green turtles (Chelonia mydas). Generally speaking, turtle eggs take approximately 60 days to hatch, with the laying season occurring from April – September.
El Director Municipal de Ecología y medio ambiente, Rafael Chacón Díaz, ha informado que los nidos de tortugas descubiertas en Cozumel este año fue de 4.300. Este número es más del doble del año pasado de 1.900 nidos de tortugas. Existen dos tipos de tortugas que anidan en Cozumel,tortugas caguama(Caretta caretta)y la tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas). En términos generales, los huevos de tortuga toman aproximadamente 60 días en salir del cascarón. La temporada va desde abril a septiembre.
Cozumel Firefighters Receive Donation for Protective Gear
Christmas comes early for the Cozumel Firefighters, who were the recipient of more than 32,600 pesos from the Soriana Foundation. This money is slated to go towards the purchase of protective equipment for the team, including new jackets, helmets, hoods, gloves and pants to ensure their safety as they protect our island.
Navidad llega temprano para los bomberos de Cozumel, que recibieron más de 32.600 pesos desde la Fundación de Soriana. Este dinero es programado para la compra de equipos de protección para los bomberos, incluyendo nuevas chaquetas, cascos, capuchas, guantes y pantalones para garantizar su seguridad y asi poder proteger y cuidar a nuestra isla.
  
Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Spot el gordo & Gorda - by Monica Velasco
Spot el gordo is a two year old Beagle, chubby to say the least and very social. He has only been with us for a day and he is happy, unaware that his owner has given him up permanently. We are featuring him right away because most likely he will soon be very confused by not being picked up by his family. Please help us find a home for this rolly dog, before he gets depressed. He is very healthy and well cared for.
Spot el gordo es un Beagle gordinflón y bonachón de dos años de edad. Apenas lleva un día en el refugio y está muy contento, sin saber que su dueño lo ha dejado para siempre. Lo estamos promoviendo desde ahora porque sabemos que pronto se sentirá muy confundido al darse cuenta que su familia no regresa. Por favor, ayúdanos a encontrar una familia para Spot, antes de que se entristezca mucho. Es un perro sociable, sano y bien cuidado.
Gorda is fat and getting fatter. This cat is not happy being with a bunch of other cats, and compensates by eating. Look at her face! She wants no truck with the gang and wants outta there. She really is a very nice and sweet girl, but 20 cats is just too much. She will be a great friend for someone who wants just one cat. Pretty, loving, healthy Gorda.
Gorda is gorda y engordando. Esta gata está muy inconforme de vivir entre 20 gatos y lo compensa comiendo de más. ¿Le notan el disgusto en la cara? No quiere saber nada de la multitud de gatos con los que tiene que convivir. Fuera de la gatera es toda amabilidad, pero no la podemos dejar afuera por su seguridad. Ella será una excelente compañera para quien quiera tener solo un gato. Es guapa y amorosa.

Police to Increase Vigilence in December
The Cozumel Transit Police Force has announced their intentions to increase their vigilance during the holiday season. Police have begun implementing a series of road checks targeted toward motorcycles with more than 2 passengers as well as individuals who are driving and using their cellular phones. Each of these activities is in direct violation of state laws. In addition, police will be checking for those driving under the influence of alcohol and ensuring that vehicles are in possession of current transit papers.
La policía de tránsito de Cozumel ha anunciado su intención de aumentar su vigilancia durante la temporada de vacaciones. La policía ha puesto en marcha una serie de retenes en la carretera dirigido a motocicletas para no llevar más de 2 pasajeros, así como personas que están usando sus teléfonos celulares cuando están manejando. Cada una de estas actividades es una violación directa de las leyes estatales. Además, la policía va checando aquellos conductores bajo la influencia de alcohol y garantizar que los vehículos estén en posesión de documentos de tránsito en regla.
  
"Corazon de Oro" AMMJE Gala Event this Friday
“Corazon de oro” is the annual gala dinner for Cozumel’s Women in Business Association (AMMJE). This year's gala will be hosted in the Hotel Presidente on Friday, December 10th 2010. During the dinner, awards will be presented to different women of the Cozumel business community that made a difference in 2010. The “Corazon de oro” for Community Social work will be given to: Narcedalia Martin de Gonzalez, the Business Woman of the year award goes to: Isabella Telloli of Cozumel Seaside Retreats, the Business Woman Trajectory to: Patricia Kumul de Massimino of Scuba Club Cozumel, the Young Business Woman: Mayra Cabrera Ruiz of the Free Blue Guide, and the Business Woman for Political Trajectory Addy Joaquin Coldwell. Congratulations to all!
Este Viernes 10 de Diciembre se llevara’ acabo en el hotel Intercontinental Presidente, la cuarta edición del “Corazón de oro”, la cena de gala organizada por AMMJE, la asociación de mujeres empresaria del capitulo Cozumel. En este evento se reconocerá’ el valor y la entrega de mujeres empresarias que se han destacado por su trabajo en la comunidad cozumeleña en el último año. New Exhibitions at the Museo de la Isla
This Friday, December 19th, the Museo de la Isla will be inaugurating three new exhibitions. Included are paintings and sculptures by Masters Calderíuz and Bolio, "The Magic of Colors", a collection of paintings and photographs by Eddy Escalante Canto, and "25 Years in Cozumel", a collection of paintings and serigraphs by Jennifer Gilchrist. The exhibitions open at 8 pm.
Este viernes, 19 de diciembre, el Museo de la Isla inagura tres exposiciones nuevas. Ironman Helps out the Cozumel Humane Society - a PAWS UP to Linda and Marty Martelle. Marty ran the Ironman in Cozumel and collected $875 dollars in sponsorship money from friends and family that was donated to the Cozumel Humane Society.
